Gutter politics? Electrical box tampered with on eve of Hon Maduro-Caines basketball event

Less than 24 hours before the start of a basketball tournament hosted by the Committee to Re-elect Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines, the electrical wires in the panel box at the basketball court on the Millicent Mercer Grounds in Baughers Bay were reportedly cut.

A Committee Spokesperson noted that yesterday, March 5, 2023, when they went to check the grounds, everything was intact; however, today March 6, 2023, on the day of the event, it was observed that the wires were cut and allegedly tampered with.

The Committee to Re-Elect Hon Maduro-Caines has reported the situation to the BVI Recreational Trust, which manages the facilities.

Event must go on @ new venue

Since the event was scheduled to start at 12 noon today, the event has moved to the Multi-purpose Sports Complex and will start at 1:00 PM.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Recreation Trust Eustace C. Freeman aka ‘Boss’ denied that there was sabotage or that anyone may have tampered with the wires.

Mr Freeman noted that someone was sent there to work a few weeks ago but may have not completed the work, but he has already commissioned someone to get it fixed.

Many residents calling and texting our news centre believe it was a deliberate act and sabotage; however, our news site cannot independently confirm that and will wait on a final word from Mr Freeman.
The basketball tournament has not been moved to Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

2-man race for Zone 6

Thus far, Hon Maduro-Caines, the Virgin Islands Party candidate and the Junior Minister for Tourism, has one declared opponent in controversial former Minister Myron V. Walwyn, who is running with the National Democratic Party. Mr Walwyn is before the courts after having been arrested and charged for ‘Breach of Trust’ over a wall around the Elmore Stoutt High School costing taxpayers $1.6 Million.

The former Minister said at a press conference last week that “my hands are clean."

Many of his supporters believe he may be a victim of the alleged UK witch-hunt against residents who speak out.
