'Relationship between USVI & VI at an all-time high’– Premier Wheatley

irgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said the relationship between the Virgin Islands (VI) and US Virgin Islands (USVI) is now at a high and that talks are ongoing to address cross border issues.

“Right now, the relationship between the USVI and the BVI is at an all-time high and actually the relations had started to become strained… and we took the step of trying to strengthen the relationship again,” Dr Wheatley remarked.

The Premier was at the time addressing the topic of tourism and border issues between the USVI and VI and its impacts on the tourism industry on the Monday, November 21, 2022, edition of 'Da Morning Braff' with Floyd Burnett on Tola Radio VI 100.5 FM.

“We right next to each other, and we have so much potential for cooperation and for growth. I know there are some people who are pushing this narrative of let's fight against the USVI, I don’t believe in that at all. I believe we must look out for what’s fair for the BVI and also what's fair for the USVI,” Premier Wheatley stated.

Both sides can benefit from negotiations - Premier

He added that once there is reciprocity on both sides, it is a win for everyone across the two territories.

“So let’s try to see how we can make a difference so that when we need the USVI, if we are trying to negotiate ferries… because they know that these [VI] guys trying to be fair to us,” he added.

When questioned on later ferry runs between the two countries, Premier Wheatley said while he has to check with the Deputy Premier and Minister of Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R2) on the topic, the relations between the VI and USVI remain strong and whatever could be done will be done.
