Wheatley Eyes Second Bank For VG

Ninth District Representative and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon. Vincent Wheatley has his eyes set on a second bank for residents of Virgin Gorda (VG).
The island, with the help of government subsidises to Banco Popular, was able to receive a banking facility last year August after the sole bank – Scotia – pulled out in an effort to cut costs after the hurricanes of 2017.

Speaking to the matter during his contribution to the Other Business section on Tuesday, December 15 2020 in the House of Assembly, Wheatley informed that he is eying the government admin building as a location for this banking facility.

“They are adding new spaces there so that they can add more services in Virgin Gorda. Mr Speaker these spaces that we are fixing up now is going to make these things possible, and we must give thanks that these things are happening now although they happened since 2017, we couldn’t ignore them and move forward. We have to start from back there and work our way out of the hole that we met this country in,” he remarked.

“I have been lobbying hard to get Treasury, lobbying hard to get a bank in there so persons don’t have to go to Tortola just to get a check. We have the National Bank, this is the Government’s bank, why can’t you be on Virgin Gorda or Anegada?” he added.

There are no banks on Anegada, the furthest island in the territory with a population of roughly 300.
